Evaluation question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from that to your full product?

I carried out a preliminary task of making a front cover and contents page before I started on my music magazing. For the preliminary tast I had to take images around the college campus and create sell lines for the magazine. I hadnt done much research into magazine and hadnt had much practice of different softwares. For this piece of work I got a grade D. This grade was somthing That I want to greatly improve on for my music magazine piece of work. I have created a prezi which will tell you about each magazine and the progression I have made from the preliminary task to the music magazine.

Evaluation question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

After researching into my target audience, finding out their interest, likes and what they look for in a music magazine. I was then able to apply the research and information I found from my audience into my music magazine to attract and address my audience. I feel I have been successful in doing this.

To attract my audience I have included a list artist on the front cover of my magazine from all different genres, this will attract a wider audience. I have also included a good cover model which will attract the male audience and let the female audience aspire to be like the cover model because she looks attractive and sophisticated. I have used quite informal language to keep it casual because the target audience Is 16+ and it wont patronise them.

The colour scheme of my magazine will attract and appeal to my audience because it is a red/black/grey/white palette which is very sophisticated and mature and this is something that 16+ people look for. This colour scheme is affective because it is gender neutral, my colour scheme connotes sophistication, youthfulness and outgoing, my target audience will find these things appealing in a magazine. All of the colours I have used are very bold and they all contrast together meaning that they are very eye-catching and attractive meaning it will stand out when it is on the shelf. I have kept this colour scheme consistent throughout every page of the magazine so that the magazine looks professional.

Evaluation question 4

Who would be the audience for your media magazine?

Magazine audience

here is a slide show of the different audiences that would be for my magazine using Animoto

The target audience for my magazine is both male and femal of the ages of 16-25 interested in a variety of genres of music.

For my magazine 'Pitch' the readers will be interested in alot of different genres of music like indie, dance, R&B, house, indie, rock etc. I chose to do this type of genre of magazine because I wanted it to reach a wider audience to gain an overall larger readership. The type of people to read my magazine will wear highstreet/lower priced designer on trend clothes. They will attend gigs and festivals such as Leeds and Reading, these types of festivals have a mix of different genres of music which will be reflected in the magazine. Therefore my target audience will want to read this magazine because it will have artist dressing in the same style as them, and music that they listen to, this makes the magazine alot more personal to them, the reader, which will increase the readership.

Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have identifed 3 music magazines and their institutions because my music is a sub-genre and these magazines cover a few genre, and these institutions are likely to distribute my music magazine as they are similar to mine.

Music magazine institutions on prezi

When looking at the IPC media website I have found that it collectively reaches over 20 million users every month, so I feel choosing this institution it will be in good hands and will allow it to be distributed to my audience successfully. This will also potentially increase the purchases of my magazine through association with the 60 other magazine brands that IPC Media own, by advertisements, which could also bring in a wider audience.

Evaluation question 2

How does your media represent particular social groups?

To display how I have represented a particular social group, I have compared the character represented within my magazine and a character represented in a mainstream magazine, in the form of singer Rihanna. The individual displayed in the mainstream media magazine, represents the particular social group of the R&B/pop/dance music genre, my magazine is a sub genre magazine so there are many different genres throughout the magazine. This social group and artist, has become increasingly popular in the last few years, therefore I feel it will appeal to my audience and will be best fitted to portray this social group in my character.

In these two characters they have similar body language. Both of the characters postures are also very similar, they are both looking over their left shoulder. However the image from the mainstream media magazine is more close up than my image. Both have a central eye line match which is very eye-catching for the audience. The hair and makeup is also very similar. Both featuring a darker eye makeup with pink/red lips. Their hairstyles are curled and tousled with it covering the right side of their faces.
Both images also look like they have been taken in a professional photography studio with a plain white background this makes the images stand out more and allows the dramatic imagery stand out more.

The artist featured in the mainstream magazine, Rihanna, is someone who helps to promote the values and beliefs that any girl can become a talented musician like Rihanna in the genre of R&B. I also want to promote the belief that you can achieve anything if your try hard enough, like Rihanna who started off her music career straight after high school. However she is sometimes criticised in the media about being too provocative. I would like to portray my character as a good role model to girls and that they don't have to be provocative to be successful in their careers.

Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My magazine develops the forms and conventions of a real media product. My magazine is a sub genre, so in order for it to be recognised as this magazine by my target audience, I had to use the common conventions that applied to this genre of magazine. To display this I am using prezi .

Final Contents Page design

Final Front cover Design

Final Double Page Spread design

Front cover development

I got feedback on my magazine from my teacher. I have be told to change the layout of the magazine, I am advised to create a banner at the bottom of the magazine and put one of the sell lines there. I moved the front cover image to left of the cover because I wanted to make room for the main sell line which I moved from overlapping the image to the left side of the magazine. I moved the main sell line because the colours of it did not work well with the colours of the model image. I then had to move the other sell lines to the left so there wasnt any dead space. The layout out here I dont think looks very good, I worked with it alot by moving all the sell lines around to see where the best place was for them.

Article draft feedback

I created a draft article for my double page spread in my magazine this will be the main article in my magazine this article will be on the fictional artist "Lucy Gray" and her comeback after rehab. I chose this topic as the artist is of the same age range as my target audience.
My teacher marked this draft as a grade B, and she said overall it was a very good piece of work. My teacher marked it and gave me feed back on how to improve it, my teacher said I need to talk more about certain things such as how the artist album can be downloaded and bought. I will apply this feedback to my final article.

contents page feedback

The assessment grade I got given was a C. The strengths of the contents page was that its is neat and well designed, the images are appropriate to the target audience. The areas to improve were that the page numbers had to correspond with the images I have put them with. The fact I had used the same model on some of the images had been out lighted to be changed, and the dead space within the images.

To achieve a higher grade I listened to my teachers feedback. I got three different images with different models so it looked like a proper magazine. I added extra contents to fill the page. I corrected the page number so that they corresponded with the articles.

front cover feed back

I was given written feedback and a assessment grade. The assessment grade she gave was a B. The strengths she outlined for my front cover were that the image had a great eye line match with the audience. The colour scheme is good and its clear to the audience. I have used excellent adobe Photoshop skills for the design work. I have used appropriate sell lines for my target audience.
The areas to improve are to make the date smaller. Move the main article sell lines to a different place to make them easier to read.

I acted on this critique by designing a new front cover. I readjusted the size of the date and placed it after the masthead. I created a banner with the sell line "competition", this created more space for the magazine and left the layout looking less busy. I took the main article sell lines "Lucy Gray"and placed it to the left so that the colours of it contrasted better with the model. I then moved the "+" above that. The composition of the page looks a lot better due to the feedback I got.

front cover peer assessment feedback

Once I had completed my my front cover for my magazine, it was shown to my classmates for them to give me feedback on it. They were given sheets where they wrote positives and negatives of my front cover. This feedback was very useful because they are in my target audience. I have included some examples of the feedback sheets that had very beneficial feedback.

Positive feedback - The positive things that were picked up on my feedback was that the magazine was suitable for the target audience of 16-19 and of both genders and was identified straight away by my peers in class. They also picked up on the fact the magazine is a hybrid genre. Another thing that was picked up on as being very good was the front cover image, people in my class said it was a well edited clear image and was integrated well with the text. They also said that the image fits well with the genre of the magazine. What was also commented on was the font of text and colours used on the cover, they said the text was very bold and stood out which was something i was trying to achieve when making the magazine front cover. The colour scheme was said to be good and was liked by both genders. Overall they said my magazine front cover looked very professional.

Improvements - There was few things that were outlined that could have some improvement on, one this was that the sell line "post rehab interview" was difficult to see as in was in front of the model image so was a bit unclear, to improve on this I added a effect on the text to give it a shadow so that it was bold and would stand out against the model image. Another thing that was outlined to improve on was the white space on the page as there was quite a bit of it so I decided to move some of the sell lines around to make less of it.

double page spread development#3

I then added the article text, I pulled a quote from it and put it in the middle of the article so that it would tease the audience to read the article and so that it will make sure that the reader carries on reading the article. I put the drop caps in at the start of the article because when I had researched other magazines they had done the same so I wanted it to look like a professional magazine.

I then added a strapline. Putting a strap line will really benifit the readership of this article because it tells the reader what the article is about in only a few short sentences.

contents page development#3

I have put in all the images for the more major contents and have put the titles in for the contents. In the bottom right corner there is a competition the readers can get involved in and a place where they can go to subscribe. I have kept the lettering and their background the same colours of the magazine to keep it consistant.

Front Cover development #3

This is my final development of my product before I get feedback on it.I added the other extra neccessary information, the barcode and price. I also added some more contents. I wanted all of the dead space to be filled without it looking to overvcrowded and I think I have managed that. It took a while for me to get everything in this set position, and took alot of trial and error with moving everything around on the page.
.

double page spread development .#2

I then created a title for the double page spread. I wanted this again to be bold and express what is going to be written in the article, I also wanted it to have meaning to the artist. I chose 'Off the rails' because the article is about the artist going off the rails then going into recovery and coming back out better than before. I think this name will draw the reader in to read the article because they will be intrigued to see what its all about. I chose two different fonts 'Georgia' and 'Muro' I think these two fonts looks good together because they contrast, I also chose contrasting colours which are consistant through out the magazine.

contents page development #2

I have started the layout of my contents page. The more important contents will have an image along side them so the reader will understand more about what they are about. The rest of the contents will go in the comlumn on the left.

Front cover development #2

This is further development of my front cover. I have added the sell lines and the main article lines I have chose the fonts "muro" and "bebas" because they are bold and make the magazine look modern. I colours I chose for the sell lines are red, black and because they are gender neutral and keep with the house style. I have put the main article sell lines in the middle of the page to make it stand out and to make it connect with the artist of the main image.

double page spread development#1

I chose this image as the main image for my double page spread. I chose it because its a very clear and inviting image, the model looks sophisticated and this will draw the reader in to read the article. The models clothes match the colour scheme of the magazine. This sharp red colour contrasts well against the white background, this gives the page a professional look.

Contents page development #1

I have started designing my contents page. I have began by choosing a bold font for the title, I chose from a range of font but think this best suits the contents page as it is large and this will catch the readers attention to the page. I have chose the colours red and white as they are consistant and will keep the magazine looking mature.

Front cover development #1

I have started to create my front cover I first started by choosing a image then editing it, I chose this image of my model because there is a eye line match and she looks sophisticated, also the image is striking and will the also contrast with the colours I want for the masthead and sell lines. It took a while for me to get the image on the page as I had to do alot of editing to ensure it was at the best quality it could be. I then chose a font from the selection of fonts that I have researched to use for the masthead, the font I chose was 'Muro'. I chose the font 'Muro' because it is bold and will stand out from the rest. It took a while to edit the image because of the models hair so it took a few attempts to make it right. I still need to add other conventions such as sell lines etc.

Photoshoot costume and makeup

Before taking the actual images that I would use for the magazine a lot of preparation and planning took place to get the models right for the photo-shoot. I brought a selection of clothes and often had intervals throughout the shoot so that the models could change into something else. Before I started taking photos I carefully applied makeup to my model and styled her hair. We stopped frequently so that I could re do hair so that it was neat and do touch ups on the models makeup. This was to make sure that all of the photos were perfect and consistent. By changing the outfit of my model a few times this meant at the end when choosing the final images I had a few options to choose from. For this photo-shoot I had a few friends help me, this was very beneficial as it meant they could do some of the touch ups whilst I concentrated on taking the images.
